Growing up my mom would make porcelain dolls for a little extra income. We would make them from start to finish. I would clean greenware, wire bodies and dress the dolls. When I was about 6 years old I would sneak onto my moms sewing machine and practice sewing lines on fabric. I would sit and turn the knobs of her machine. Once she realized I was adjusting the the tension she decided to teach me how to sew. I would make small pillows, pillowcases and drawstring bags. Playing around on the sewing machine became a fun hobby for me.
When I graduated from High School I was given my own sewing machine to take to college. I would make little things here and there but it wasn’t until I was married with kids that I really got into sewing. I was making blankets, home decor pillows, curtains and other house hold decor. Eventually when I had my daughter I started making clothing. Now I love to sew every day. I love the fabric, the hum of the machine, and the elation of a finished garments.
This summer I decided I should teach sewing lessons. I put together a sewing book of information for the new sewist. Easy patterns, definitions, picture guides and even a little hand sewing. My adorable students made Pillowcases, zipper bags, drawstring bags, tote bags and skirts. I have loved seeing them grown and hearing from their parents how proud they are of there girls. So today I am sharing a few tips
Sewing machines
I have always been a true believer that if you have a great machine, sewing is just easier. I started out with a $100 machine from Walmart. I used that little Singer for about 10 years or more. She worked great. I could only do basic stitches but for what I was sewing it was great. When I really started sewing I bought myself a Janome from Ebay. She was a dream. Computerized, 50 different stitches, a real workhorse. I could do almost anything, but she started having fits and it was time to move on. I still keep her around for my daughter but I fell in love with another. My dear Elizabeth… She can thread herself. Cut her own stitches. Monogram my initials.. What more can you ask for. She is amazing. I really do have a mechanical love affair with my sewing machine. I love to sit down at my Babylock and sew something pretty.
Sewing books
I wrote my own book to help my students this summer but here are a few that I have used that are great for a beginning sewist. One of my simple patterns we used in class was for a hand stitched envelope/ coin purse. Here are the templates to make your own. Click on the pictures to download them for your little sewist. I just used felt and cross stitching thread to make mine. Perfect for those little fingers to learn to sew.
As part of my Unplug for the Summer post I want to share a little something to get a new sewist started! A sewing book with all the basics, sewing supplies, gift card, a fat quarter bundle from Riley Blake Designs and a tote bag to carry it all! Be sure to enter to win and share with your friends!

Sewing is so great for summer bores! It takes a little time to plan and make and they feel so accomplished and love using it. Great idea!
