Halloween Costume – Astronaut

Here is my little Astronaut. He loves Space. Ever since he was 2 he has wanted to be a real astronaut. So a few years ago I made him one.

I started by making the white jumpsuit. With McCalls pattern #4951.

For the boots covers, hat, tech bib and wrist cuffs, I purchased colored vinyl. I found most of mine at Hancocks fabrics. They had a huge assortment of vinyls. I used the pattern above to make the wrist covers and boot covers.

I kind of free handed the tech bib. I diy button covers for the colorful buttons and I purchased real NASA patches to add to the costume.

For the had I used a basic cape hood pattern and altered it a bit.

To make him a little more astronaut I made a jet pack. Unfortunately the 1 photo I took of it did not work. I am super bummed. So I will have to explain a little. Then you use your creativity to make your own. I stated with a medium rate mailing box. I punched a hole in the top and the side. I attached a curtain rod ring to the side and threaded clear tubing through it and then the ends of the tubing into the holes. I also added a string of battery powered Christmas lights to the tube. At night it looked awesome. Then I just used house hold items to make the gadgets and gizmos on the box.

I used reflective webbing to make the box a backpack and a belt. That way he could be seen ant night and look super cool.

Halloween Costume -Little Bo Peep

Little Bo Peep Costume

I wanted so badly to make her a Little Bo Peep. Last year was the year to do it. Her little costume was a labor of love. I looked at a lot of pictures of Bo peep costumes. I came up with this.

I started with a basic peasant top. I used my Simply Jane pattern. I just made the shirt white.

For the skirt I made a basic skirt but doubled the fabric to make it more full. I added a little lace to fancy it up.

For the bloomers I used a basic capri of pajama pattern. I added 3 rows of lace to the bottoms for ruffles. (Lace and fabric from Joanns)

Her crook was an after Christmas sale candy cane I got for .25 cents. I wrapped it with white ribbon and added a large Pink bow.

Her little lamb was an after Easter sale at Target we picked up for $2.00

For her vest I used an old t shirt and cut off the arms and cut down the neck line as my pattern. Then I used black velvet and lined it with some scrap fabric.I used some turquoise fabric and cut 2 half circles. I gathered the half circles and pinned them to the vest. Sew vest with right sides together, leave a small opening and turn. Top stitch the vest. I then added small grommets for lacing.

Her bonnet was a trial and error mishap. Made from Peltex, ribbon and underwear fabric. I cut a basic bonnet pattern and gathered my fabric onto it. This hat took me as long to make as the whole rest of the outfit. It turned out to be the perfect finishing piece.

Halloween Costume – Spider

Here is my little Spider. no one really loves spiders but I love this one. I think this is one of my favorite costumes I have ever made. And it was super simple to make.

I first purchased black sweats, gloves and beanie. With a Bean bag pattern. I altered it to leave the bottom and top open. I made 6 long fabric tubes and sewed gloves to the end of each of them.To Stuff them with stuffing. Starting with the main body, a bean bag usually has 6 sections. I sewed 3 sections together and the second 3 sections together. Pin your arms into place leaving a 6 inch hole near the top of the sections for your kiddos arms. Stitch your 2 sections together. On the top and bottom you need to make a casing. Add your elastic. I liked mine a little tight to make sure the pillows I added would not fall out. To link the arms I wrapped black ribbon around each wrist and tied a knot. Then made a loop for my son to have around his wrist.

When you are ready to trick or treat Just slip it over your kiddos head like a shirt and add pillows to fluff him up. I added a little makeup for the full effect.

Costumes of Halloween Past–Pikachu

This is my little Pikachu. My boys went through a Pokémon phase. I think many boys do. He begged for weeks for a Pikachu costume. So I came up with this.

I used a costume pattern to give me the 1 piece outfit. We made his zip down the back so you wouldn’t see the zipper.

Then I added Dark Brown Ric Rac across the back. I cut a tail out of Peltex and fleece. I sandwiched the peltex in between the 2 pieces of fleece and stitched around the edge. I sewed the tail onto the back of the costume.

The hat used a basic winter hat pattern and I added the ears. That was it. He loved that costume. He asked to wear it the next year. But I think he was to tall. He was toasty warm for trick or treating and as happy as can be.

Halloween Costume – Dinosaur

My Green and yellow polka dotted Dinosaur. This little dinosaur is super simple to make and cute to boot.

I started with a pair of green sweat pants. I cut a bunch of yellow circles. I hand stitched them on while watching my favorite show one night.

Next I made an aviator hat out of green fleece. Make sure to add a few triangles to the hat to match the triangles on the back.

For my tail I cut yellow and green fleece squares. I used a few different sizes. I folded them in half to make triangles. Overlap your triangles making a chain. I stitched along the edges. I then pinned them to the back of the shirt. To attach permanently, line up your squares on the angle and stitch down the center. Attaching the squares to the shirt. Proceed to fold the squares into triangles and stitch the edges.

Add a few painted dots to their face and your little dinosaur is ready to go.

Halloween Costumes – Butterball Turkey

Dressing up a baby for Halloween is a rite of passage for a new mom. This year my guy was a Butterball turkey. Mostly because he is a chubby round faced baby that you just can’t resist pinching. This costume was so easy to make. Brown clothing and my silhouette made this one happen. And he looked adorable!

Little Bo Peep Costume Inspiration

Since I found out I was having a little girl. I wanted to make her a Little Bo Peep Costume. She is finally the ripe old age of 4 so I thought I had better get the costume done before she starts wanting to think of her own costumes. I found this beautiful Little Bo Peep Costume on Etsy one day (Pinned it) and decided it was what my Little Miss was going to be for Halloween.

She makes lots of beautiful costumes year round in her shop.

Isn’t is beautiful?? I just loved the colors and the style. Perfect for my Little Miss. She has these beautiful natural blond curls and a sweet little smile, to go with the outfit. The price was a little out of my budget. So off I went to make my own with a little twist.

I found a lamb at the end of the Easter season for $3. I made a bonnet instead of a fabric cap out of Tim Tex, fabric and ribbon. And I used an old outdoor candy cane from Christmas as her crook wrapped in ribbon and fabric flowers. It was the perfect size for her. I used my own peasant styled shirt pattern and made a basic skirt and bloomer pattern. For the vest I used a simple tutorial from Make it – Love it and added the hip plumes myself. Here is how it turned out.

Princess Aprons

So I saw these little cuties on a website the other day. I thought they were totally cute and I am a sucker for princess stuff. I only have One little girl. I kind of give into anything girly. Until I saw the price tag. $25. Way to much for this mama to pay. So I made my own. It only cost me about $8 and about an hour to make 2 of them. So today you get Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty!

What you need for one:

1/2 – 3/4 yard fabric (color depends on the princess)

1/4-1/2 yard fabric for extras

I cut my main fabric into sections. 13 inches for skirt, 5 inches for sash. If I made this again I would buy and extra 5 inches to make my sash longer.

Next cut your extras. in this case the hip puffies ( not quite sure what to call them)

1.I started with cutting 4 rectangles 9 1/2 wide x 6 1/2 long.

Then I rounded 2 bottom edges.

Stitch around 3 sides. Clip rounded edges before turning.

Turn, Press and topstitch.

3. Gather the top. I gathered mine to be 6 inches wide finished.

Next I folded my sash to have a finished edge.

1. Fold top left corner to right side lining up edges.

2. Fold top right corner to left edge. (You should have a triangle on the end of your sash)

3 Press.

4. Fold in half and press.

At this point I folded the straight edges of my sash a 1/2 inch on both sides and pressed them to prepare for stitching everything together.

Okay so here I missed taking a picture. But Its really simple. I gave my skirt a little hem around 3 sides. 1 long (45 inches) and both short (13). About a 1/2 in. I turned 1/2 inch and pressed then another 1/2 inch and pressed.

Across the non hemmed edge I did a basting stitch as large as I could to do my gathering. Leave you threads a little long for this. Pull one thread and begin to gather you fabric. When you have it the length you want tie the threads in a knot to hold it till you can stitch it. My skirts finished length after gathering was about 18 in.

I then added my puffies. Placing them each on center. Pin them into place.

Take your sash find your center and match it up with the skirt. Pin the wrong side of the skirt
to the right side of the sash.
Sew the sash puffies and skirt together.
Once done fold the sash over onto the skirt. Start at the end of the sash and stich to the other end. As you stitch you will be finishing the sash and top stitching the sash to the skirt and puffies.

When your finished it will look like this! I added a fabric twisted rose to the center to give it a little more glam. My little miss loves it!

I was thinking these would make a great birthday gift or party favor for a Princess and her guests!

I think next time I may make a Belle, Tinker Bell or Alice in Wonderland apron.
