Rug Slip Cover Makeover

April 15, 2012 By: Freetimefrolics

Rug Slip Cover DIY www.freetimefrolics.com
Since moving into our new home I have been slacking when it comes to decorating.  Pregnancy and a new baby really take its toll.  But finally I am feeling good enough to do something.
I finally got the “get my house decorated bug.”
I have this new, larger home than the last.  Which means money.  I have limited funds to fancy up my casa.  But I am determined to do this on a budget.
From our old home I have this rug. It is still in fair condition.  But the style is not mine anymore. I have been looking for the right rug.  But I just haven’t found what I want.  Or can not afford what I want. Then I had an idea.
Just did a little DIY rug recovering.
My thought was to make it like a duvet cover.  It just slips on and off.
So I searched through fabric I already had. (I buy fabric on a whim if I love it.  It is a terrible habit. I have quite the collection of fabrics in my craftroom.)  And found one I thought would work.

So here are the before and afters.
See that adorable blue and green with sun flowers.
It needs a little pick me up.
And here is the after.
Here is the new fabric. Natural Cotton with a Chocolate Damask.  I love this print.  I bought a few yards a year or two ago at Home Fabrics and Rugs.  I have been saving it for a special occasion.  One just like this.
I added an outside border so I didn’t have to piece any fabric.  I think it turned out great.  It makes a nice addition to my living room.
I used about 2 yards of damask fabric and 3 yards of brown.   I had some brown leftover for another project.
So here is how I did it.
My rug is 5×7.  My damask fabric is 54 wide.  I needed 12 more inches to make it wide enough.  So I added the brown.  I measured my length minus 12 inches.
So my inside damask and backing fabric measured 54 x 78.

My border fabric was cut 3 yards x 13 inches. One piece was slightly wider.  I used these piece for the top.  So I would have a little extra for the folded flap.
I sewed the side borders on first. Then the bottom and top.
Next pin the backing onto the top.  Right sides together.
Fold the border in half and pin the sides to the backing fabric.Stitch your side seams.
Leave our corners for the next step.
I made my corners with a mitered edge.
Stitch your seam to make your corners. Trim off the extra fabric.
For the top I folded the  top down so the top border is 6 inches. This makes the fabric become like a fold over sandwich bag.
Next I marked the backing fabric to make button holes. I made the button holes and hand sewed the buttons.
Slide your rug in and your done.

Washi Tape Coupon holder

April 11, 2012 By: Freetimefrolics

washi tape couon holders @freetimefrolics.com
I have been thinking about another Washi Project.  I found these Coupon file envelope thingy’s at Michael’s along with some more Washi tape. Washi tape is  so versatile and easy to use.  There are so many projects you can add color to in minutes.  So here it is!

Supplies:
Washi Tape
Accordion folder
I found these in the $1 section at Michaels
optional:  sticker letters or vinyl
Here is the Washi Tape I found at Michaels.
The Brand is Recollections and they call it Crafting Tape.
My other Washi Tape is from Target and Mindy Maes Market.
I just cut the tape into strips and layered it on the folders.
It took me about 5 minutes.
Next I used my Silhouette and cut letters out to spell Receipt and Coupons. I layered them over the Washi Tape.
A great little folder for my coupons and receipts.
A little Pizazz in my Purse.

Washi Tape Bracelets

April 9, 2012 By: Freetimefrolics

I have the cutest neighbor girls.  She is  8 years old came up with this one. I just had to share.  After making these my 4 year old was thrilled.  She has been wearing them around like a princess. They are cute easy and you are not broken hearted when they are ready to throw a way.  I was inspired by this blog post I found on pintrest: Sewing in no mans land. And wonder woman of course!

Supply List:
Empty toilet paper roll
Washi tape
Duct tape
any kind of lovelies; stickers, jewels, flowers whatever you like.
Start off with an empty toilet paper tube.

Cut in Half and up the center. So it looks like a letter “C”

Start wrapping with Washi Tape. I did mine short end to end.  But you can do whatever.  Wrap your entire TP roll.

Next I cut a piece of duct tape the lenght of the inside of the toilet paper roll.  Stick it to the inside.  I use the duct tape to give the bracelet some stability and to hold the shape.

Cover in whatever {Lovelies} you would like.  We used jewel stickers.

This is a great rainy day or summer activity for your kiddos or to use for a Halloween costume for boys or girl super hero cuffs.  The creativity is endless.  Mix or match, make shapes and designs with your washi tape.  Just let your kiddos create!

Knobby Necklace

April 5, 2012 By: Freetimefrolics

A friend found this adorable knob necklace a small boutique in Utah.  It was adorable.  The price not so much.  So we went out hunting for the supplies to make one.  It is kind of one of those personal preference kinda projects where no two will be the same.  So here is my {Knobby} Necklace

I found my knob on line at Mindy Mae’s Market.  I used my others for cabinet doors.  This one was perfect for a necklace.

You have to get a knob that has a whole all the way through.
Sometimes they are called curio knobs.

This knob was purchased at Hobby Lobby.
Not to bad for a cabinet knob.
Right???

Washi Tape Twist Ties

April 3, 2012 By: Freetimefrolics

I finally scored some Washi Tape.  Here in Idaho it is hard to come by. I ordered some from
Mindy Maes Market.  I have been waiting and it finally came.  Now I needed a project.  I thought this one was easy and fast and is great for gift giving.  I was inspired by these Organize & Decorate Everything.

Washi Tape Twist Ties

This is great for little gifts in cellophane (especially for boys or when ribbon doesn’t work) or to wrap up cookies for the neighbor.
This simple process only takes a mater on minutes.
So let’s get started!

You need:
Washi Tape
(Mindy Maes Market & Target)
Wire
(Mine is floral wire from Walmart)
wire cutters

Here is my little stash of Washi tape.
Some is From Mindy Maes Market and some is from Target.

Cut wire into 6 in pieces.
Cut washi tape to size
Lay wire in center of tape on sticky side
Fold in half with wire in center

Twist it up on anything!
I made the ones in my dish in about 15 minutes.
Super easy and cute to boot!

We all scream for {Ice Cream!} Felties

March 15, 2012 By: Freetimefrolics

I love all the cute Felt food. But oh the time.   My little girl loves to play in her little kitchen.
I have seen lots of felt food tutorials. Super cute ones.  But never came across felt ice cream so here it goes..

Here is how I did it.
I started out with these shapes.

This prints as a 8.5 x 11
Supplies:
1 sheet of felt for each color of ice cream. Eache sheet makes 2 scoops.
I chose dk. brown, white, pink and blue
2 sheets of Cream for the bananas, Each sheet make 2 finished bananas
1 sheet of Brown for the cones makes 3 cones
8 ping pong balls
Needle & Thread
Glue gun
For my blue Ice cream I added some small buttons to look like bubble gum chunks.

I cut
8 bananas
2 of each color for ice cream and ice cream bottoms
2 ice cream cones and tops

Take a needle and thread. Stitch a basting stitch around the outside edge of the Ice cream circle about 3/4 of and inch from the edge.

Add your ping pong ball  to center and pull threads tight.  Tie threads off.
Take bottom circle and hot glue to bottom of Ice cream.
*Note: I tried to use stuffing for the insides but they didn’t hold there shape well
and the ping pong ball helped it hold its shape.

They should look like this when you are done.

Add a small square of velcro to the bottom of your ice cream scoops.

For the cone I used the above pattern and glued the 2 edges together.  Leaving the top open.
Fill with stuffing.  Making sure you push a bit down to the bottom.I used the point of my scissors to get the stuff into the smallest part of the cone.  Fill cone full of stuffing to make it stiff.

Finish off cone by using a blanket stitch around the top to secure the cone top on.
I found that the over stuffed ones work best for stacking multiple ice cream on.  The velro sticks better.

For my Banana I stitched 2 bananas together leaving a small opening for stuffing.  Use a pen or blunt scissor ends to push a small amount for stuffing to each end of the banana.  Just enough to give the banana some dimension.  Stitch closed and trim edges.

for the cherries I used pom poms and pipe cleaner.
I divided the pipe cleaner into 3rds.  Fold pipe cleaner in half and twist.
Find center of pom pom and dab hot glue into center.  stick pipe cleaner in and pinch to seal them together.

I found these little bottles at Joanns. They came in a set of 6.  I took 2 and added a little
paint to the inside to color the bottle.
Everyone needs a little chocolate and caramel sauce. Right???
*For my banana split trays I used the stiffened felt and cut a rectangle.  I folded the ends and sides about an inch and glued them at the ends.

Crap room to Craft room part 2: Ribbon Redo

March 8, 2012 By: Freetimefrolics

Did you miss Part one of Crap room to Craft room??
See part One here.
I am loving my new set up.  It makes sewing and crafting so much easier and less stressful. I get so much more done in the time I have to sew and craft.

Now onto another project to improve the room.
Oh the dreaded Ribbon dilemma…
What to do???
I have tried many methods of organization.  None seem to fit.
I found this great bin at Walmart.

It is the perfect height for a spool of ribbon. Perfect!
An the container is stackable.
Even Better!
This ribbon was in 1 large bin with a bunch of loose ribbon on top.  I could not find anything.
Now its pretty and separated by type of ribbon.
Grosgrain, satin and specialty
Thank heavens for mini elastics.  I remember these when you had to get them from your orthodontist.  Perfect for Little Miss’ hair..
And now my ribbon.

I bought these at the dollar store.
I wrapped the ribbons around my hand and then wrapped a rubberband around them.
Now all pretty.
Next Ric Rac and trims.
Now they are all neatly wrapped and in my handy bins.  The perfect size for my shelves.  I had all kinds of Trim, Ric Rac and Pom Pom fringe.

The closet is still a little cramped. But fairly organized.  At least I know where everything is.
And thats all that matters…Right??
Well 2 big projects down and a few more to go.
My Crap room is becoming a Craft Room.

Pot O’ Gold

March 5, 2012 By: Freetimefrolics

I started thinking about  March much to long ago.
Hoping that spring would come, I guess.
( We still have not had measurable snow this year.)
I guess March will be a snow filled month.  But with a little {Luck}it will be warm and toasty inside.

So back to my shelf.  I thought a Pot O’ Gold would be a cute addition.

I found this Pot at a party store.
(This was not easy to find in the heart of Valentines season.  But they pulled one out for me.)
Thinking this was to Blah.  I thought a little pizazz was necessary.
So out comes the Modge Podge and Glitter.

I stuck my hand in the pot and coated part of the pot in Modge podge.
Then sprinkled on glitter.
Turn the post and repeat.
I left the bottom plain so it would sit flat.

I let it dry for a bit and then touched it up with a little MP and glitter where needed.
For the gold I purchased mardi gras coins from the dollar store.
I tried to find just gold coins but they were no where to be found.
Nothing a little spray paint can’t handle.
To start I traced  the top of the pot o’ gold onto a piece of paper.
I laid coins on top of the pattern.

The next layer was E6000 and a layer of coins stacked on top and in a little to make a pyramid type look.
I kept layering glue and coins until I reached the top.

For stability I used a grocery sack in the center to keep the coins from caving in until the glue was hard.
Let it dry over night.
Then next morning, Spray them gold.

I filled my pot with empty plastic sacks and sat eh gold on top.

Voila!
Pot O’ Gold

Vintage Post Card DIY

March 3, 2012 By: Freetimefrolics

I made this vintage postcard for my St Patricks Day Mantel.
Her dark hair and green bow were screaming at me.  I loved this little print.
I found the tutorial on Pintrest.
It came in the form of a video on You Tube
Not a whole lot of explanation but I figured it out.
Supplies:
Gel Medium
(This is really the name. Just gel medium.  The brand I found was Goldens.  It runs around $15 a jar.)
Flat, board canvas
Print you want to use.
Mine was a vintage print I found online.
I had to open it in Photshop and flip the image so the text appeared backwards.
Modge Podge
Sponge Brush
Ink pad
Use plenty of gel medium.  Not to thick though.
You want a nice even coat on the canvas.
Lay your picture on top of the gel medium
Smoothing out the picture with your finger tips, spoon or credit card.
From the center out to the edges.
Get out all the air bubbles.
Let dry overnight or at least 8 hours.
Thicker gel means a little longer to dry.
After your canvas has dried completely, take a wet wash cloth or sponge and wet the entire canvas.

Keep rubbing with sponge or fingertips until paper comes off completely.
You will have fibers that stay. Just keep rubbing until they all come off.
Let dry.
(*Note” If you let it dry and you still find fiber on the canvas, Just re wet in the problem spots and rub lightly. Let dry completely.)
On antother one I did teh color rubbed off too a bit.  Just don’t rub to hard.  If you used enough gel medium you will be fine.
To finish I used my ink pad and rubbed the corners a bit to antique it.  Then gave it a nice coat of modge podge to seal it.  It worked perfect.
Here is my finished canvas.
I love the way it turned out.
It cost me maybe $4 to make, if that and I have a bunch more
gel medium for several projects.

Mantel

My little girl and her dog are perfect for my mantel.
thanks for visiting.

St. Patricks Day Decor

March 3, 2012 By: Freetimefrolics

I have this beautiful shelf my Pappy made for me.  It is one of a kind. I love it.  He made it from a Window arch and added a crown molding shelf. It looks a lot like a Mantle but it doesn’t hang over a fireplace.
In an effort to decorate a little but not overhaul my home. (Lots of work, 4 kids you get the picture)  But I thought this would be a great place to have seasonal decorations
and not be to much for me to handle.
So here it is. Pretty simple, but fun.

Banner
I bought the foam shamrocks at Joanns and strung them on some Twine I got from
 Pick Your Plum.

 What do they have today???)

The iron crown was a piece I had on  a shelf.
Vintage window came from an old house. They were replacing there windows
and threw out the old ones. {SCORE}
The wreath was a vine on clearance at Michaels I bout a few years ago.  I just wrapped it into a circle and wired it together.
In total my mantel updo for St. Patty’s day totaled less than $20
Fun, Simple & Cheap!
Just the way I like it.
